Hi ! We are a diesel supplier for the retail market in Port Klang Malaysia, we have been selling High Speed Diesel from Petronas / Esso / BP over the years. Due to the recent surge in diesel price, we are considering lower grade / cheaper diesel. My question is:

    1. Is HSD equivalent to MGO ?
    2. Can MDO and IFO be used by most diesel engines in smaller boats and ships? is there any side effect to the engine?
    3. Can different grade of diesel being mix together? if yes, is there any rule of thumb for the ratio?

    Thank you

    Regards,
    Lue

    Hi, Lek,
MDO normally can be used for smaller boats.
And if IFO to be used, then some gadget to be installed and injector changed to enable it to be run on IFO.

The laymen asks for D2, 02 and a price per MT.

IFO380 and 180 are residual fuel oil bunker grades, notated by their maximum centistoke under ISO standards. They are typically a blend of fuel oil as the base product with a small amount of cutter stock, sometimes diesel.

MDO and MGO are distillate fuel oil grades, with the latter very similar to off-road diesel in many countries. Their parameters are also set by an ISO standard (ISO 8217:2005). MDO is essentially MGO but with up to 10% content of a heavier fuel oil.
