Cleaner fuels and exhaust scrubbers are receiving the bulk of industry attention at present as means to reduce ship emissions. A number of companies, however, are offering fuel additives as a means to increase fuel efficiency and reduce emissions through cleaner burning. Perhaps additives are being overlooked in the current debate?

    Hello Guy:

Absolutely. The reason they are being overlooked is that there have been so many broken promises made in the past by less than reputable companies promoting after market additives/fuel treatments.

I can count on one hand the number of reputable additive companies in the world and our company, Power Research, is one of them.

Five weeks agao we completed stationary engine testing at MAN B&W test facility in Denmark. I will have it on MAN letter head in the next two weeks. I already know the results and will share them with you when they come in. Have a great day.

Mike - I look forward to hearing about the test results.

I wonder if the greater promise of additives is for fuel efficiency (saving on bunker costs) or for cleaner fuels (reducing sulphur emissions etc): or both?

    Hello All,

Two tested and proven fuel additives are Omstar D-1280-X and B-15.
These fluid technologies clean and greatly increase the lubricity of diesel engines, power generators and marine engines. The results are greater engine power, increased MPG and reduced emissions.

In addition the Mrine World now can reduce asphalting by as much as 80%. For those who run ships this is a tremendous break through. In addition the PPM performance is 70% better than those required by the EPA and the ARB. A major shipping line is testing the technology.

Ships can run the robusk bunker disel fuel at a much reduced emission level. If the ships emmisions levels are lower than those required by the government, must that ship swith to low sulfur diesel fuels at the 40 mile marker from the port?

There is no need for ships to replace engines, be retrofitted or forced to use ineffective fuels. This strategy has been employed to address diesel trucks with minimal success.

The world has made it clear that we must lower emissions and conduct business. This is not an either or situation.

    Kind regards

My impression, perhaps inaccurate, is that shipowners have been slow to explore the potential of additives for fuel cost savings. What's holding them back?

    Guy,

Thank you for inviting me to your forum.

Skepticism of the ‘additive’ market has unfortunately been earned over time, however, where there is smoke (and mirrors) there usually is fire, and the effective products bear the burden of the less effective. The fuel industry uses additives in every engineered blend, yet usually only to the minimum required standard.

We at Xtendercorp have focused our expertise on the bunker/heavy fuel industry because our experience has shown any fuel can be made to burn more cleanly and efficiently.

I will leave most of the details to an article you suggested I write, but suffice it to say, where New Technology is definitely needed to resolve the long-term issues the marine industry faces, specific additives can play a big roll as part of the solution, right now, by greatly improving a companies fleet economy and environmental footprint, at a net cost far lower than the return in fuel savings alone.

I look forward to more conversations here.

    Gentlemen.

I have included an article as a summary from a full scale test of fuel and lube oil additive from Pacific Petroleum Ltd, performed by The National Technical University of Athens Greece.
The original report can be down loaded from www.pacificpetroleum.gr

    Hello Guy

A six month fuel additive test with a major shipline is near completion. I will publish the results at that time. All of the preliminary feedback is very exciting. The reduction in emissions is significant. The ashpalting reductions are large.

This should be a major step forward for the shipping industry. The technology works well. It is easily deployable to the masses. The technology is economically desirable.

Guy, Tell me what you think?

    Dear Sir,
With the current media highlight on climate change issues, and our planet in
peril due to ghg emissions and global warming. The UN is calling for immediate
constrains of co2 emissions in all industries.
The shipping industry is a major emitters of ghg, as most vessels run on
residual fuel in most of it's operations on board vessels.
As combustion efficiency is never complete anywhere, and fuel qualities vary
from different source of supplies and country make complete combustion
efficiency impossible. To overcome belching smog emissions problem on board vessel is to enhance combustion efficiency with additive that can provide
higher combustiblity to residual fuel oil or diesel distillates.
    Please visit www.infernofuel.com
for mitigation of emissions with Inferno Atomiz emulsion breakers and vegetable oil based additive.

    Hello Guy.

I have included an interesting official proposal to IMO informing about the effect of our additives regarding reduced soot emission.

Anyone who are interested in real hard facts and technical reports, tests etc. are welcome to contact me. We have been in this business over 25 years. Or have a look at www.pacificpetroleum.gr web site.

    Hello Guy,

The discussion about reducing emissions in the marine industry is growing stronger every day. Most fuel additive companies have been claiming for a long time that their products will reduce emissions, but this has never been a successful marketing strategy until recently. Some ship owners have recently started to look into this because they know that some sort of regulation is inevitable in the near future.

A carefully chosen fuel additive, like Aderco 2050, is a quick and easy way to reduce emission from burning heavy fuel, but by how much? This is the major obstacle we are facing right now. Our most important test was made on sister ships, for 1 year, where one ship was supplied with Aderco additive. Most of the results relate to the ship's performance, which is directly linked with emissions and fuel economy. We can see major improvements in phases of pre and post combustion and significant fuel savings. The test report is given below.

To conclude, a good fuel additive is a realistic solution to reducing emissions for 3 major reasons: better combustion of poor quality fuel, reduction of sludge waste and slower degradation of mechanical performance.
