My name is Andy Thackwell and I am currently studying BSc (Hons) in Maritime Business at the University of Plymouth. I'm in my final year and currently writing my dissertation on emissions trading schemes within the shipping industry, as part of my research for the work I have constructed a questionnaire covering some general aspects of emissions trading and I would be most grateful if you could take a short time to complete it. The project is purely academic and has no commercial objective, also it is fully confidential with none of the information acquired being viewed or used by anyone other than myself.

As the realisation of the impact of pollution upon the planet has occurred, so has the effort to reduce the emissions from across industry and also in the domestic domain. For many years now, land based emitters have faced tighter controls on the levels of many pollutants they emit, and subsequently they have reduced there emissions substantially relative to the amount of work they do. Due to the relatively environmental nature of shipping with regard to other modes when comparing emissions on a tonne/mile basis, it would appear that shipping has escaped measures to reduce pollution, and so as land based emitters reduce their emissions, shipping is accounting for a much greater proportion of emissions than at any other time. This has led to international pressure to reduce emissions in the industry, one method of doing so is emissions trading schemes. Emissions trading schemes have been around for many years and in many different forms but they have been mainly used for the controlling of land based emitters of pollution. There have been recent trials and proposals to now try to apply a trading scheme to the shipping industry. The questionnaire I have constructed seeks to gauge the feelings of those involved in the shipping industry with regard to a trading scheme.

I would be most grateful if you could take 5 minutes of your time to complete the online questionnaire (link below) and aid me with my research into this relatively new area within the shipping industry.

Thank you very much for your time.

Also I would be very grateful of any suggestions of further informartion you feel would be of interest.

Emissions Trading and the possibilities that it offers is probably best looked at the context of the development of the markets... Which is why Coracle (professional development provider to Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers - www.ics.org.uk) offers online Energy and Emissions Trading information. This might be of use to you: http://www.coracleonline.com/courses/eande.htm

As a Maritime Business and Law grad from Plymouth myself, we're always happy to offer Plymouth students and alumni discounts on all our courses - just use promo code plymouth to get 10% off!
