Often green initiatives from the shipping industry come directly from the major shipping companies (i.e. speed reductions, fuel switching, kites, etc). I am looking for case studies about best practices for industries that use ships to move a majority of their cargo. Often they do not have much influence over the shipping operations.

Does anyone know of any best practices (specifically in retail but not necessarily limited to) that have been adopted to green shipping from the cargo supplier side? Is there a credible consortium or group that one could join to try and lever cleaner practices from the shipping industry (i.e. Coalition for Responsible Transportation)?

    Thanks!

    Andrew,

The Puerto Rico marine trade lane may offer what you're looking for. As an island economy, everything comes by vessel. Two of the four carriers are tug/barge operators who use cleaner distillate fuel. As a result of this, the Puerto Rico marine trade lane has the cleanest vessel emissions in the world on a per cargo unit basis. There is increased awareness of this among policymakers, some of whom believe it can be turned into a strategic benefit that will make the Bio-Island even more attractive to pharmaceutical companies. I would be pleased to talk with you further about this as we are one of the carriers using the cleaner distillate fuel. I can be reached at 212-626-6706 or via email at jmccown@trailerbridge.com.
