    Dear Dr. Vis,

I am recenly started to work on the container shipments and similar stuff. In order to measure the actual fuel consumption of a vessel according to some formula we will need Design Fuel Consumption and Design Speed of the vessel.
I would be very grateful if you could let me know how can I get such information specially "Design Fuel Consumption" for each ship.
Is there any database or similar thing?

    Best,

I am sure there are standard books giving this information in great detail. The design fuel consumption would be the horsepower of the engine multiplied by specific fuel oil consumption in gms/bhph. The horsepower of the engine at different loads is also an information made available by engine makers. If you assume that a ship operates at 85% load, there is a horsepower corresponding to this load. When this horsepower is multiplied by the specific fuel oil consumption, you would get the fuel consumption.

Every ship carries most or part of this information supplied by the engine maker/shipyard.
