Dr. Vis,
Need your advice. Vessel bunkered 200 tons grade RMG380 low sulphur fuel oil at St Petersburg, Russia. Several days into sea voyage, main engine rpm dropped (without knocking sound) and engine was stopped. All six units main engine fuel oil pumps sustained damage (scoring on barrels and plunger, seizure). Aux engine fuel pumps also sustained damage. Subsequently, Chief Engineer rectified and proceeded with other fuel oil onboard. Bunkered fuel oil samples (two) had been sent to DNVPS for analysis and tested parameters (per ISO8217) stated fuel oil complies to ISO8217:2005 RMG380 specification; particularly AL + SI (catfins 7) and sulphur (1.31). C/E reported fuel oil purification system, main engine exhaust temperatures, fuel oil temperature to engine, turbocharger, etc were satisfactory. Can you plse advise what could hve caused the fuel oil pump damage on the M/E and Aux engine.
