    Dear Dr Vis,

Ship's calling SECA area are required to use LSFO instead of HSFO.

Will it be economical for the vessel's to use MDO instead of LSFO while in the SECA region.

What are the difference in Specific Energy between them?

For an Example if we roughly take a sailing distance of 300 miles, at a speed of 15.0 knots and a daily consumption of HFO( HSFO ) of 50 mt. What will be the estimation of daily consumption for LSFO and MDO respectively.

    Pls Advice.

    Thanks

    Dear Mr.Raj,

The calorific value of the diesels is about 5% more than that of HFO's on a mass basis.

Based on a daily consumption of 50 MT, the savings will be about 2.5 MT. Since diesel sells at nearly double the cost of the heavy fuel, saving while using diesel fuels compensates only to the extent of about 2.5 MT of diesel oil.

High sulfur FO can be converted to LSFO at very minor cost. This will improve economy drastically for bunker fuel.
