Ivar Tonnesen has been in the shipping industry more than 30 years. He spent 8 years as a seafarer before he went ashore in 1972. The following year he moved to North America where he spent the next 12½ years in various positions within chartering with US based vessel operators. He joined Kristian Gerhard Jebsen Skipsrederi/Gearbulk in April 1985 as line manager, and took over as manager of the bunker department in January 1990. His responsibilities amongst others included bunker planning, hedging and purchasing for Gearbulk Pool Ltd and associated companies.
He is a past Treasurer and Chairman of IBIA and was a member of the IBIA Education Committee. In 1993 he was appointed by The British Standard Institute to be part of the UK delegation to ISO TC28/SC6/WG8 which has completed its work on bunker procedures known as TR 13729 (Now a full standard coded ISO 13729). On March 1, 2008 he joined Pacific Basin Shipping (HK) Ltd as Manager of Bunkers, setting up the bunker department and co-ordinating all activities related to bunkers. He was also appointed member of ISO/TC 28/SC 4/WG 6 which was set to revise the 3rd edition of ISO 8217/2005 and ISO8216-1/2005 (Now coded as ISO 8217/2010 and ISO 8216/2010
Retired July 31, 2011 and subsequently set up the consultancy company “IVT Consulting” specialising in advising bunker buyers how to manage their bunker affairs. Either via auditing their present arrangements or set up a department from scratch, always with the aim to ensure that the Buyer get the best return for each dollar invested in fuels.
